This is probably one of the greatest examples of guerilla film making I’ve ever seen. It breathes quality, is mesmeric, the performances hold you and it’s soooo watchable.
The writer/director Alex Klaus also shot it and though you probably think he used some high end camera, in fact he used a panasonic Lumix gh4 with old lenses to give it a feeling of pure old cinematic style. I checked out the price of one these babies which usually are found in your average tourist’s handbag and you’re talking a couple of hundred quid with old lenses costing in the £30 bracket apiece bracket I think from past experience.
Biggest weakness of the camera is it’s not full frame which means depth of field tends to be wide, but Alex Klaus manages to adapt the shooting style so you don’t even notice this. This little bit of me being interviewed was shot on the gh4’s big daddy the Lumix s1 full frame, amazing cameras but Alex Klaus takes it to the nth degree with the grading.
Not only did Alex write, direct and film it but also produced it! Line producing and scrounging all the great locations. Nuff respect! And we haven’t even mentioned the quality of the writing…
The script is great. It contains true emotive feeling which I’m always going on about it and saying it’s the difference between film and TV but it’s not just about the script it’s about how Alex managed to get the actors to understand it.
Incredibly the total budget of the film was just £11,000 which is unbelievable given the sheer quality of the production, it easily has a feel that would give the impression that it’s low budget sure but is probably around the £2,000,000 mark and even that would be modest only name casting would bump up it marketability. Nice one Alex!
Got in touch with Alex, he’s very humble about it all. I want him on board Seven Tales of Deadly Sins and future Zed Resistor Filmworks productions, indie filmmakers MUST work together, it’s what the production is all about, bit like what I said about the 48 hour film challenge, it’s about getting together and supporting each other – united we stand, divided we fall!
We all want to be appreciated as filmmakers step one is to appreciate and support those around us, give The Lost a looksie, you’ll learn a lot about just what can be done with next to nothing, and the £4.50 it costs will be money well spent. Inspirational stuff!
Give it a look, you can watch it on Amazon on the following link: The Lost
Enjoy!
