Fodor’s Hamlet
Just in time for Xmas there’s been a splurge of orders for my version of Hamlet, not too sure why but kinda cool. Made me revisit it and read some of the reviews on Amazon, very gratifying! All very you either love it or you hate it, with review titles like: “kicking Shakespeare up the arse” and “wonderful” as well as the less praiseworthy “I wanted to like this but I didn’t” but the way I see it is if you set out to be outrageous and break the mode of something people have opinions you can’t please everyone.*

When first released it caused quite a stir picking up awards at the Nantes Film Festival and in Buenos Aires. Dare I call it a classic? Well yes! I was accused of arrogance just linking my name with the Shakespeare title, so why not?!
Here’s “that” speech: https://youtu.be/n7EjY3DMBQk?si=jkilUY46I5RTDUVt
It was shot in true guerilla style for a total production budget of £16,000, above a pub in wood green, painting all the rooms black for the night scene and then white to give that very bleached out nightmarish look. The externals were shot on the mudbanks of Southend when the tide went out.
“This is a powerfully moving film! I love the lighting and the way it was filmed. Genius!”
Makes me want to do another, always had my eye on an Othello with a paraplegic female Othello. Why and how? Have a look at my Hamlet and you’ll see how you change all the characters and keep the text the same AND make it digestible for all members of society not just the arty fartys.
